Baked Beans

Baked Beans is a classic summer recipe side dish. This recipe is super easy to create and has incredible flavor using simple ingredients. Sautéd Bacon and onions give the beans a slightly smoker flavor. While ketchup, mustard and brown sugar give it the sweet and tangy bite to balance it all together.

Summer Side Dish

Every summer growing up my mom would make her famous Baked Beans. And I hated it every time she did. LOL!

I didn’t like the texture or taste and marveled at all the adults who would rave over how good they are. I guess that is the life of a super picky kid! Extremely picky is more like it.

It wasn’t until I was an adult that I learned to really appreciate how good and comforting her baked beans really were.

When I was married and living in a different state I called her up once to ask her for her recipe. I was craving them and wanted to take them over to a friends BBQ.

Mom’s Baked Beans

She just laughed and said I just through a little of this and that in there. A typical answer from my mom when it came to her recipes.

I tried that method and they didn’t turn out the same. The next time I visited her I made her show me what she was putting in and I measured it and wrote it down.

And this is how this “recipe” came to be. Everyone LOVES these beans and there is never any left over. You certainly could add some spices or a few dashes of liquid smoke if that’s what you like. I personally think they are perfect just as they are!

How To Make Baked Beans

  • In a large skillet, cook bacon until it is just crispy.
  • Remove the bacon to drain on a paper towel.
  • Using 2 tablespoons of reserved bacon grease, sauté diced onion over medium high heat until translucent and just a hint of browning.
  • In a large bowl combine two cans of baked beans, diced onions and crumbled up bacon.

  • Stir in ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, pepper and salt.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Pour beans into a 9×13 baking dish and cover with foil.
  • Bake for 20 minutes, remove foil and bake for another 10 minutes or until bubbly around the edges.
  • Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Ingredients

  • 2 28 oz Cans Original Baked Beans I like Bush's Brand
  • 1 Medium Yellow Onion Diced
  • 4 Strips Bacon
  • 1/3 Cup Ketchup
  • 3 TBSP Yellow Mustard
  • 1/3 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Pepper Freshly Cracked
  • 1/4 tsp Kosher Salt

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, cook bacon until just crispy.
  • Remove strips to drain on a paper towel.
